WBC head to meet Pacquiao in Manila
Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao highlighted the close association and long history Philippine boxing had with the WBC.
WBC is one of the four major pro boxing bodies, along with the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Organization, (WBO), and International Boxing Federation.
“It’s really an honor that WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman will be joining us to be the guest speaker of the Pacquiao Elorde Awards Night this coming Sunday,” the 45-year-old Pacquiao said. “He is a really good role model, and his leadership is really well respected in the whole boxing world.”
“I’m very happy to be associated with great Elorde in terms of recognizing and honoring our athletes.”
Pacquiao, an eight-division world champion, was once a WBC world champion at flyweight, lightweight, and super welterweight.
Gabriel ‘Flash’ Elorde is also considered one of the outstanding WBC super-featherweight champions in history.
In addition, Elorde’s reign lasted for seven long years, starting from 1960 to 1967.
WBC’s history with Philippines
MP Promotion President Sean Gibbons said Pacquiao noted the Philippines was one of the 11 founding countries of the WBC.
“It’s a grand return to history, as the Philippines was one of the founding nations of the WBC,” Gibbons said. “During the late 1960s until the early 1970s, Filipinos were then its president and secretary-general too.”
Gibbons referred to Justiniano Montano Jr. as the WBC president at that time.
On the other hand, the late Rodrigo Salud was the secretary-general who crafted the by-laws of the governing body.
Mauricio, son of former WBC life president José Sulaimán, will arrive in Manila on Wednesday afternoon.
“He [Sulaiman] will surely enjoy his stay here in Manila with Manny Pacquiao,” Gibbons added.
