Boxing 101: How To Win In The Ring

Punches alone do not mean you win in the sport of Boxing. It is a combination of attack and defense for the entire fight inside the ring.

With that in mind, here is what you need to know about this sport of fisticuffs.

Objective

Boxing’s aim is to be the most well-rounded fighter for a pre-determined amount of time (of several rounds). To do this, you get the most punches while avoiding your opponent’s attacks in a variety of ways.

There is a simple phrase to sum this up: Hit and do not get hit. Which is why it is important to work on both the offense and defense in boxing.

Players and equipment

The sport is fought between two individuals, with a single referee inside the ring that acts as the playing venue.

Boxing takes safety seriously, which is why the following types of equipment are required for every fighter.

– Gloves

– Mouthguard

– Groin cup

– Headgear (for amateurs and beginners)

Fight rules

Boxing’s modern rules are based on the Marques of Queensberry rules which were codified in the 1860s, and which are still followed to this day.

Timing: Boxing is fought in three-minute rounds, with breaks between rounds only last a minute.

Scoring: There are three judges (five in Olympics) at ringside that will score the fight on a ten-point must system. Ten points will be given to the best boxer in every round, which is based on punching, defense, and overall ring control. Also, point deductions will be made either by knockdowns or by the discretion of the referee when he sees violations of the boxing rules.

How to win in boxing?

There are two ways to win in boxing.

Knockouts are simply the best and fastest way to win in boxing, where you can floor your opponent with a single shot, or a series of punches before the bell rings. It is simply the highlight of the sport.

Decisions (unanimous, split or majority) are made when the fight goes to the distance, in which a set of judges will determine the results of the bout. In other words, “We go to the scorecards.”

To conclude

It is easy and simple to box. But to be a world champion requires passion and total commitment to be the best, one punch at a time.

To quote the fabled Michael Buffer, “Let’s get ready to rumble!!”
