Controversy in Fury vs Usyk fight ‘unacceptable,’ says WBC head

World Boxing Council (WBC) president Mauricio Sulaiman wants the Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) vs Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) Fight on May 18 to proceed without any controversies.

Sulaiman said that introducing additional judges and a video reply should keep the upcoming undisputed world title fight clean from any hitches. He doesn’t want anyone between the Fury and Usyk camps claiming a “bad night” once their fighter loses.

“Controversy in a fight of this magnitude would be unacceptable,” the WBC head told Sky Sports. “If you have more officials, then the possibility of a wrong score goes to a minimum.”

“Anybody can have a bad night. That (having more officials) is the only intention to make sure there’s no controversy,” he added.

Sulaiman is pushing for five or six judges, not the usual three, along with a video replay, in the upcoming fight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

It would be recalled that WBC champion Fury beat Francis Ngannou in a 10-round decision in October under questionable circumstances. Usyk was knocked down by Daniel Dubois in the fifth round of an August fight last year, but the referee said it was a low blow.
