Fury trapped in €10-million penalty for Usyk fight

World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) faces a huge fine if he doesn’t fight Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) in May.

Fury will be forced to pay a € 10 million penalty imposed by a high-ranking Saudi Arabian official should his May 18 showdown against Usyk doesn’t push through. His Excellency, Turki Al Sheikh, who is a Saudi adviser at the Royal Court, added the huge fine as part of the contract for the title fight.

The penalty clause was added after Fury pulled out of the original fight date of February 17 as he suffered a cut during sparring. There were also reports that Fury is coming off in poor form from his training camp.

The 35-year-old Fury is looking to add the IBA, WBA, and WBO title belts from Usyk should he beat the Ukrainian world champion. A boxing expert believes Fury has no choice but to face Usyk to avoid the huge fine.

“What’s ahead of him now is Oleksandr Usyk, a very motivated, a very pissed off (fighter),” ring analyst Chris Algieri told Probox TV. “The guy has never been beaten, People ask, ‘What is he so good at?’ He’s good at winning. He doesn’t know how to lose.”

“Focus on the man you’ve got right in front of you. Don’t disrespect Oleksandr Usyk’s chances in this fight,” he added.
