Munguia-Canelo faceoff

The fight between two Mexicans on May 4 in Las Vegas was officially announced during the press conference.

Munguia, who greeted Canelo with a handshake, took the chance to thank the undisputed super middleweight champion for making the match possible.

“I want to thank Canelo, the fighter with the four titles, I want to thank him for the opportunity,” said Munguia. “We’re working hard for this, and on the 4th of May, it’s going to be a big fight. Viva Mexico.”

Mutual respect

Munguia is coming off an impressive win over English fighter John Ryder in Phoenix last January.

After winning the WBC silver super middleweight championship, the young Mexican fighter called out Canelo for a fight.

In addition, Munguia said that the bout will be great for Mexicans.

Furthermore, the 27-year-old Munguia shared that he started his boxing career idolizing Canelo.

“He has always been a source of pride and motivation for me,” Munguia said.

“When I was coming up and I used to see him fight, I said, ‘That’s a good guy, I want to be like him.’ And today we have the chance to face him, and hopefully, we get to be like him one day.”

Munguia, who turned pro in 2013, said he is ready for the biggest fight of his career.

“Yes, we’re ready,” said Munguia. “We are ready for everything, and we are going to give it everything and have a great fight that night. This is the beginning of the top of my career.”
