Manny Pacquiao named as honorary president for Taiwan’s first pro boxing league

Manny Pacquiao, a Filipino boxing icon, has been named as the honorary president of Taiwan’s inaugural professional boxing championship, the Carry Fighting Championship (CFC).

The development came after Carry Fighting Sports Group Corp. CEO Jerry Yen announced during CFC’s press conference on January 9.

Pacquiao, the only boxer to win world championships in eight different divisions, said that the partnership with Taiwan’s first-ever boxing league was a “strategic effort to boost the nation’s boxing scene and foster international collaboration within the sport.”

“I believe the CFC will become a new milestone in the fighting sports world, showing the limitless potential Taiwan holds in this field,” said Pacquiao.

CFC COO Billy Drummed said that the first match will take place in March.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao last saw action in an exhibition match against Korean martial arts influencer DK Yoo in December 2022, where he came out with a unanimous decision victory.

The 45-year-old will make his return in the boxing ring in a similar bout against Muay Thai fighter and kickboxer Buakaw Banchamek on April 20. 

Earlier this month, Pacquiao made a surprise announcement about his potential rematch with rival during the Risin Fighting Federation New Year’s Eve event in Saitama, Japan.
