Garcia pulls off massive upset over Haney

Garcia, a major underdog heading into the fight, scored a majority decision victory with scores of112-112, 114-110, and 115-109.

The reigning WBC super lightweight champion was in control in the first few rounds, but Garcia’s left hook completely turned the tide for Haney.

Garcia, 25, floored Haney in the seventh round, the first time in his 32 pro fights.

The Southern California-native used his powerful left hook to take down Haney in the seventh, 10th, and 11th rounds.”

“I just knew I had control after that,’’ Garcia said. “It’s hard to recover from big shots. You know, maybe my conditioning wasn’t my best, but at the end of the day I got the job done.’’

Garcia improved to 25-1, while Haney fell to 31-1.

However, Haney, also 25, will continue to hold the WBC super lightweight belt after Garcia failed to make weight on Friday.

Garcia weighed 143.2 pounds for the 140-pound contest.

Nonetheless, the Garcia win shocked the entire boxing community, including Filipino boxing legend champion Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao proclaimed: “[Ryan Garcia] is here to shock the world!”

“I don’t give a f— what people say about me. I walked through the fire and still held it down and still beat f—ing Devin Haney and still drink every day,” said Garcia. “Not necessarily am I proud of that, but I’m just saying it was a statement to show you, you guys can’t really f— with me.”

Meanwhile, Haney talked about Garcia’s left hook that left him completely off guard the rest of the fight.

“I’m disappointed about my performance,” said Haney during his postfight interview. “I [showed I] was a true champion and I could fight after being knocked down.”

“He caught me early when I was sleeping on him,” he added. “He caught me by surprise. I fell asleep on the left hook. … I gave him a shot. It’s only right he gives me a shot back.”
