TEXAS COMMISSION SANCTIONS TYSON VS PAUL AS PRO FIGHT
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) has sanctioned the Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) vs Paul (9-1, 6 KOs) bout from an exhibition to a professional fight.
The commission did not make a statement to clarify its reasons for sanctioning the fight.
Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) co-founder Nakisa Bidarian confirmed the commission’s decision.
“Over the past six weeks, MVP has worked with its partners to satisfy the requirements of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations to sanction Paul vs Tyson, and we are grateful that we have gotten to this point,” Bidarian told ESPN.
The fight will be held at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 30.
SLIGHT CHANGE IN FORMAT FOR TYSON VS PAUL DESPITE PRO FIGHT STATUS
There will be a slight change in format for the Tyson vs Paul fight despite its now pro fight status.
Tyson and Paul will fight over eight two-minute rounds with both of them using 14-ounce gloves.
However, the TDLR’s decision will now have this fight’s outcome affect their professional boxing records.
“Mike Tyson and Jake Paul signed on to fight each other with the desire to do so in a sanctioned professional fight that would have a definitive outcome,” Bidarian said.
The fight will be telecast on Netflix, which will venture into combat sports for the first time.
TYSON IN PRO FIGHT FOR FIRST TIME IN 19 YEARS
The fight will mark the first time Tyson will enter the ring as a pro boxer in 19 years.
“Iron” Mike last fought in a pro right in 2005, when he lost to Kevin McBride.
The 57-year-old’s last professional win came in February 2003, when he knocked out Clifford Etienne.
Tyson’s last fought Roy Jones Jr, in an eight-round exhibition bout in 2020. The match ended in a split draw.
The 27-year-old Paul, whose only loss came against Tommy Fury in 2023, hopes to score the biggest win in his pro career by beating Tyson.
