WORLD BOXING IN TALKS WITH 25-30 POSSIBLE NEW MEMBERS

World Boxing is holding negotiations with 25-30 potential new member nations to keep boxing in the 2028 Games.

The breakaway group aims to supplant the International Boxing Association (IBA) in time for the LA Olympics.

FIBA was expelled by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last year after figuring in disputes over its finances, among others.

Aside from its issues with the IOC, the IBA is also expelled due to its Russia ties and concerns about poor or unfair judging of bouts.

TOULSON OPTIMISTIC OF CURRENT NEGOTIATIONS

World Boxing secretary-general Simon Toulson on Thursday remains optimistic about the body’s negotiations with the possible new members.

“We’re in excess of 25, 30 countries asking us quickly if they can apply,” Toulson said.

“And I think there’s another 25,30 countries behind them that are starting to assess the implications and how they can join,” he added.

World Boxing currently has 27 full members, including the United States, England, Germany, and the Philippines.

Toulson is confident that World Boxing membership in Asia and Africa would get “almost at double figures.”

IOC SETS ‘EARLY 2025’ DEADLINE TO KEEP BOXING IN 2028

The IOC set a deadline of early 2025 to find a new international body to keep boxing in the 2028 Games.

Boxing will still be staged in the Paris Olympics this year.

However, the IOC warned it cannot sustain such an arrangement until 2028.

If World Boxing fails to get the IOC nod to replace IBA, boxing will be removed from the 2028 Games.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport last week upheld the IOC’s decision to strip IBA of recognition from the Olympic family.
